Barnsley 5-0 Rochdale

Last updated : 04 May 2015 By Rob Miles (BarnsleyBoy)

Barnsley ended the 2014-2015 season in style with a thumping 5-0 victory, their biggest league win of the season.

It is The Reds biggest league triumph since they won 5-0 at Birmingham in September 2012.

Incredibly it is their biggest league victory at Oakwell for SIXTEEN years when they defeated Portsmouth 6-0 in August 1999. They did beat Burton 5-0 at Oakwell earlier this season but that was in the FA Cup.

Three of Barnsley’s goals came in the final ten minutes, the second time they have achieved this feat this season. They also bagged three late strikes in the 5-3 defeat to MK Dons.

The Reds have scored five goals in the 90th minute or later this season.

It was a welcome win for Barnsley, ending a run of nine games without one.

Seven of Barnsley’s last eight victories have been accompanied by clean sheets.

The Reds kept 13 clean sheets in 2014-2015, their most since the last time they were in League One, 2005-2006.

All five goals arrived in the second half, the first time this has happened since that Birmingham game three years ago. It also means The Reds scored only nine first half goals in their final 26 games.

Barnsley had a staggering 13 shots on target today, the most they have managed in any League One game this season.

Conor Hourihane had a hand in four of Barnsley’s five goals. He scored one and also sent in corners that were finished off by Josh Scowen twice and Mason Holgate. The supporters Player of the Year finishes the season with 14 goals and 15 assists!

An opposition player was sent off against Barnsley for only the fourth time this season, Barnsley have won three and drawn one.

This win means Barnsley finish in 11th place in League One, the first time they have finished in the top half of a division since they finished 5th at this level in 2005-2006. It is only the fourth time they have gained a top half finish in the past 18 years.

Sam Winnall’s 92nd minute goal, the fifth and final one of the game also remarkably tipped Barnsley onto +1 goal difference. It is the first time The Reds have finished with a positive goal difference since their League One promotion when they finished on +18. It is only the third time in 15 seasons.

Barnsley won on the final day of the season for the first time since 2011.

It is their biggest EVER final day win. Their previous best was a 5-1 triumph over Southampton in 1926-1927.

It is Barnsley’s joint biggest win against Rochdale, matching a result from 1966.

Barnsley’s final points total of 62 is their best in a non promotion-winning season since also gaining 62 League One points in 2003-2004.
