Blackpool 1-0 Barnsley

Last updated : 26 September 2021 By Rob Miles

Barnsley’s poor start to the season continued with a 1-0 defeat at promoted Blackpool meaning they have won only one of their first 10 games in all competitions, their worst start since winning only one of the first 19 in 2019-2020.

It means Barnsley have lost to a newly promoted team in each of their last 16 second tier seasons, last avoiding this fate in 1998/1999.

Barnsley have failed to win any of their first five away league games now in each of their last three Championship seasons.

They are winless in eight away games (all comps) since a 1-0 win at Huddersfield on 21st April. It is their longest winless away run since failing to win any of their first nine games on the road in 2019-2020.

Barnsley lost a league meeting with Blackpool for the first time in five clashes and only the second in nine.

It was only the second time Barnsley have tasted defeat at Bloomfield Road in their last seven league visits.

In all competitions, five of Barnsley’s last six defeats at Bloomfield Road have been via a 1-0 scoreline.

This was only Blackpool’s second league goal at home in 2021-2022, and they like Barnsley have scored two goals in front of their own fans this season.

Barnsley had 60% possession for the second successive game, yet have failed to score in either, with only Hull City having scored less (5) than Barnsley’s six league goals so far.

The Reds have gone back to back league games without scoring for the first time since a run of three in January (v Norwich, Swansea and Watford)

Barnsley had 13 shots for the second game in a row, their most in a league game in 2021-2022 and most since the final regular home game of 2020-2021 against Norwich (15)

Blackpool also had 13, the first time both teams have had the same amount of shots in a Barnsley game since the season opener at Cardiff (10 each)

The total of 26 shots was the most in a Barnsley game in 2021-2022 and most since Huddersfield away in April (also 26)

There were 30 fouls committed in the match, the most in a Barnsley game in 2021-2022 and most since Rotherham at home in April (also 30)

Blackpool manager Neil Critchley said:

"Shayne was a real pest today - he deserved his goal. His speed of thought is amazing and he has great positional sense.

"He attacks spaces so well and he can be a major threat for us. He put in an excellent centre-forward's display.

"We were very good, in the first half particularly, but sometimes when you don't make it two when you're on top it can come back to bite you.

"Hopefully we're finding our feet in this league, and that's a big thing for a side that is newly promoted."
