Barnsley’s strong start to the season took a knock with a 98th minute goal in an awful game inflicting the second defeat of the season.
It is the first time it has took until the 20th September to suffer a second league defeat since 2018-2019 when it didn’t arrive until the 20th October and 13 games in.
Both defeats have come on the road, the first time Barnsley’s first two league defeats of a season have been away from home since 2022-2023.
A Barnsley game was 0-0 at half time for only the second time this season (from 10 games in all competitions) – the other being the 1-1 draw with Bolton. It is the first time the Reds have gone on to lose 1-0 in a game goal-less at the break since the 25th January against Stevenage which just like this one was decided by an injury time goal.
It is the first time Barnsley have lost a game in the 90th minute or later since the 15th March at Mansfield with the winner coming on 90 – it is the first time they have lost to an injury time goal since the 28th January at Wycombe (2-1 after 90+5)
It is the third successive meeting between these two sides at Bloomfield Road to produce an injury time goal (Jordan Brown 90+8 this season, Marc Roberts 90+2 to secure a 2-1 win for the Reds last season and Adam Phillips 90+4 in a 3-2 Blackpool win in 2023-2024)
This was only the second time in 10 games this season (all comps) in which Barnsley have failed to score whilst conversely it is the first time since 2017-2018 that they have kept only one clean sheet in their opening 10 games (it took until the 18th game to achieve a second that season)
Barnsley have now lost seven of their last eight meetings with the Seasiders with last season’s last gasp 2-1 win at Bloomfield Road the exception.
Indeed they have won only three of the last 13, losing nine.
Only one team has scored in five of the last eight meetings and Blackpool have been that side on each occasion.
Barnsley have lost five of their last seven visits to Bloomfield Road (W2) whilst three of the last six meetings there have finished 1-0.
Despite defeat Barnsley enjoyed their highest amount of ball possession on the road so far this season (63%) and highest away from home since the 2nd March 2024 at Wycombe (64%)
In a low quality game there was only a total of four shots on target, the lowest in a Barnsley game this season and since the 28th November 2023, again against Wycombe (3)
Only one of the four was for Barnsley, their lowest amount in a league game since the 25th January against Stevenage (also 1)
It’s their lowest in an away league game since the 23rd January 2024 at Oxford (also 1)
