Bolton 1-0 Barnsley

Chris O’Grady missed a penalty for the second time this season to consign Barnsley to defeat at Bolton, and they have now failed to win there in eight trips.

After sticking three past Reading and four past Yeovil in successive matches, The Reds have now gone the following three matches without a goal and those two wonderful away days are the only times Barnsley have scored in their last eight games.

This result dropped Barnsley to the foot of the table, still five points behind fourth from bottom Charlton, who they play on Tuesday night.

When Barnsley went down in 2002 they finished on 48. Should they lose at the Valley they would have to win all their four remaining games to match that tally.

Barnsley once again failed to come from 1-0 down to win a game. The last time they managed it was the 19th February 2013. Of the 55 league games they have played since, they have conceded the first goal on 30 occasions, losing 24, and drawing six.

Jermaine Beckford grabbed the only goal of the game just before half time and he is fast becoming the scourge of Barnsley. He has scored in each of his last three matches against them.

On a day when Barnsley again misfired in front of goal it was remarkable to note that EIGHT ex Barnsley players scored yesterday, plus another who is out on loan from the club.

Craig Davies grabbed a hat-trick for Preston in their 6-1 win over Carlisle, his first treble since netting four for Barnsley in that incredible 5-0 win at Birmingham in September 2012.

Jamal Campbell-Ryce got two for Notts County in a 4-2 win over Port Vale, whilst there was a goal apiece for Iain Hume, Paul Hayes, Jason Scotland (who has six goals in 13 games for Hamilton since leaving Oakwell in January. He scored five in his first 10 games for Barnsley), Chris Dagnall, Jacob Butterfield and Michael Coulson. Danny Rose also netted for Bury where he is on loan.
