Brighton 1-2 Barnsley

Last updated : 05 December 2013 By Rob Miles (BarnsleyBoy)

Two superb goals from Paddy McCourt and Jacob Mellis got the post Flitcroft era off to a winning start with the side’s second victory in 13 matches.

It was The Reds’ first win at Brighton in 25 years and ended a run of five successive defeats. It was only the second time they have EVER scored more than once in a game there.

It was Barnsley’s first win on the road for 16 matches, dating back to February 9th.

Thanks to this result, there are now only two sides in the Football League yet to win on the road in 2013-2014- Sheffield Wednesday and Notts County.

Barnsley netted their first goal in four matches and their first, first half goals for five games.

Barnsley took the lead away from home for just the second time this season (the other finished in a 5-2 defeat) and tonight was the first time they have led at half time on the road this season.

The Reds have now scored twice on the road three times this season, but this was the first time they have finished victorious after doing so.

It was the first time they have netted two first half goals away from Oakwell since the 8th of December last year. That game (at Leicester) finished 2-2. You have to go back to January 2012 for the last time they scored two first half away goals and won the game- again at Leicester.

This was the first time Barnsley have won their next game after the departure of a manager since Simon Davey defeated Ipswich 1-0 after replacing Andy Ritchie in 2006 (four sackings ago)

Overall tonight was just the sixth time Barnsley have taken the lead this season!

Jacob Mellis grabbed The Reds second goal , his first strike in 17 appearances.

Interestingly Micky Mellon’s first team saw FOUR changes from David Flitcroft’s final line-up.

This defeat was Brighton’s first in seven matches and the first time they have conceded more than once in a game in that time.

On a sourer note, Barnsley saw five players cautioned , the most since the 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace on the 6th April.
