Cambridge United 0-3 Barnsley

Last updated : 18 September 2022 By Rob Miles

Barnsley moved into the top six of the league after an impressive 3-0 victory on their first visit to Cambridge for 30 years.

It means Barnsley have won successive away league games for the first time since a club record run of six between February and April 2021.

It is the first time they have won successive away games with clean sheets since the first two games of that run, a 2-0 win at Brentford and 1-0 win at Bristol City.

They have opened the scoring in successive away games for the first time since the final two of that run, a 3-1 win at Wycombe and 2-1 win at Luton.

Barnsley have won five games this season overall (all comps) and all five have been accompanied with clean sheets, the second time in three seasons that their first five wins of a season have all had shutouts – in 2020-2021 their first six did.

This was the first time they have gone 3-0 up in an away game since the aforementioned Wycombe victory on the 17th March 2021 and is Barnsley’s biggest away league victory since a 3-0 win at Fulham on the 15th February 2020.

Barnsley are now unbeaten in three on the road, (W2 D1) their best run away from home since drawing their final away game in 2020-2021 (in the playoffs) and their first two of 2021-2022.

Both Devante Cole and James Norwood have now scored in successive away league games, the first Barnsley players to do this since Daryl Dike scored back to back away braces against Wycombe and Luton in March/April 2021.

This result ended Cambridge’s 100% home start in League One (4 wins from 4) and is their first defeat at the Abbey Stadium since the 19th April.

Barnsley have been ahead at half time in three successive league games (overall) for the first time since February 2019 (v Scunthorpe, Gillingham and Wycombe) in their last League One campaign.

Brad Collins suffered what looked a very bad facial injury in the game and had to be taken off, the first Barnsley goalkeeper substituted in a game since Collins himself was taken off after 24 minutes of a 4-1 defeat at Millwall in April.

He was replaced by Jamie Searle who was in a matchday squad for only the second time since joining the club and came on to make his first appearance in senior professional league football in England.

Liam Kitching was given his marching orders after 68 minutes for a second yellow card. After going through the entire 2021-2022 season without a red card this was Barnsley’s first in a league game since Alex Mowatt was dismissed at Wycombe in March 2021 (however this was later rescinded)

3-0 is Barnsley’s biggest win with 10 men since a 3-0 win at Southend in League One on the 2nd March 2019 when Jacob Brown had been dismissed after 35minutes with the game goal-less.

This was Barnsley’s first league meeting with Cambridge United since the 1992-1993 season and the Reds have now won each of the last three meetings.

They have won five of the last seven (D1 L1)

They have won successive games at Cambridge for the first time ever however these have come 30 years apart.

Barnsley have won five times in total at Cambridge (from 12 visits) and four of them have come in the last six.

Barnsley had the majority of the ball possession (56%) for the first time away from home this season with this their highest on the road since the 8th February at Luton (57%)
