Charlton 1-2 Barnsley

Last updated : 16 April 2014 By Rob Miles (BarnsleyBoy)

Barnsley managed to hide the fat lady’s microphone by beating relegation rivals Charlton and moving to within two points of escaping the relegation zone.

Three weeks ago The Reds had the worst away record in the Football League with just one win from their first 17 games on the road. They have now won three of their last four away matches, scoring nine goals.

Barnsley have conceded just six goals in their last seven matches so maybe it was fitting that defenders were the goal-scoring heroes last night. Frenchman Jean-Yves Mvoto grabbed his first goal in 12 months by heading the first whilst Tom Kennedy’s attempted cross flew into the far corner of the net for his first strike since 2009. These were the first goals by a Barnsley defender this season.

The Reds have now won each of their last three matches at Charlton, and remarkably these are the only times they have ever won there.

They say it is crucial to get results against teams around you and this result means Barnsley have beaten 20th Blackpool, 21st Charlton, 22nd Millwall and 24th Yeovil in 2014 alone.

Barnsley have not been out of the relegation zone since the 31st August yet a two goal victory in the Yorkshire derby against Leeds on Saturday could lift them as high as 20th.

To do this though they would have to score at Oakwell for the first time in five matches. As mentioned before they have won three times and scored nine goals on the road since they last managed an Oakwell goal.
