Coca-Cola Championship Matchday Three: Barnsley 0-3 Preston North End.

Please Patrick do the right thing!

Broken promises all summer, promises to do better, promises not to make as bad a start as last season! On Saturday it seemed impossible that The Reds could be any worse, but oh boy they managed it tonight as
Preston pocketed the three easiest points they'll get this season.

The team looked relegation material when Davey took over in November 2006, three years and a whole new team later they STILL look like relegation material and I'm sorry but you only get so many lucky escapes before you finally drop through the trap door. After three games last season, The Reds were rock bottom and had conceded six goals. Fast forward 12 months and after three games this season The Reds are rock bottom having conceded SEVEN goals!

The strike force (bar Iain Hume who had a fine first start in nine months) don't even look like scoring. Kayode Odejayi has made 79 appearances for this football club, scored five goals and had probably two good games. Yet he still continues to start and still gets 90 minutes! He was laughably poor tonight, even missing a simple headed chance at the end! I don't know what secret information he holds against Davey, but it's making the "manager" pick him.

Davey's new look team started 2007-2008 by losing at home by a three goal margin, literally nothing has changed. It took eight minutes to concede at the weekend, tonight was slightly longer- 11 minutes.

Paul Parry surged past Luke Potter- who had a West Brom performance rather than a Lincoln one- and then smacked an effort off Stephen Foster and in off the crossbar.

It set the tone for the game, The Reds created marginally more than on Saturday but simply never looked like scoring. The best chance fell to Odejayi but his header- always heading wide- was tipped away by
Preston keeper Andy Lonergan.

The game was pretty much up on 33 minutes when Darren Carter's free kick was flicked on by Parry and Foster kept Neil Mellor onside to finish past a stranded Steele.

Davey kept his usual tactic of not changing a game before the 60th minute mark and the same team who were getting played off the park emerged for the second half.

They nearly grabbed a goal back with three minutes of the restart as Hume's excellent free kick was headed towards goal by Darren Moore but Lonergan made an outstanding save.

With over an hour gone, Davey finally made a change replacing the poor Adam Hammill with Daniel Bogdanovic and the Maltese man was denied a goal with his first touch. Another great Hume corner was hammered towards goal by Bogdanovic but superbly blocked by Sean St Ledger.

The game was all over on 72 minutes as
Preston broke away and former Oakwell youngster Jon Parkin took a touch before hammering a shot in off the legs of Foster.

With ten minutes left Odejayi had his obligatory clear chance and as usual missed. Macken flicked the ball through to send him clear but the big "striker" nodded the ball over the onrushing Lonergan and wide. It summed up his night, his
Barnsley career and Simon Davey's managerial tenure- simply not good enough!

Player Ratings:

Luke Steele: Once again let down by his defence. Didn't even bother diving for two of the goals. 6

Luke Potter: Completely torn apart by Paul Parry, had a shocker! Booked. 3

Stephen Foster: At fault for all three goals. Deflected two in and kept Mellor onside for the other. Poor game from the skipper. 3

Darren Moore: Our best defender. Made a couple of last ditch tackles and very nearly scored. 7

Bobby Hassell: Struggled tonight. Hammill offered little support and he was caught out on occasions. 5

Jacob Butterfield: Can see he is trying his best but when his team mates are failing to perform you cannot expect a 19 year old to pull it out of the bag. Booked. Subbed. 6

Anderson De Silva: Again our best midfielder. Tried to get the team going forward but was the only one. 7

Jamal Campbell-Ryce: Wants dropping or selling. Clearly had his head turned by Reading's January bid and simply doesn't look interested. 3

Adam Hammill: Hopefully not going to become another Chris Lumsdon! Hasn't had a good game since signing permanently. Was poor tonight, nothing worked, crossing was poor and simply wasn't in the match. Subbed. Booked. 3

Kayode Odejayi: What more can be said about him? He's garbage, has been garbage for two years, yet still gets games and still gets 90 minutes. Incredible. Booked. 3

Iain Hume: Great to see him start again and he was Barnsley's best player by a country mile. Delivered some great corners and free-kicks. His team mates were nowhere near his wavelength. May feel nostalgic when he returns to Leicester next weekend. Subbed. 8

Substitutes:

Daniel Bogdanovic (for Hammill 63) Nearly scored with his first touch. Incredible that after one poor game he gets dropped but Odejayi is continually picked! 7

Jon Macken (for Hume 69) Not a game changer by any means, Sodje or Noble-Lazarus would have been a better replacement for the exhausted Hume. 5

Martin Devaney (for Butterfield 80) Another dud still at the club. 5

Unused Substitutes:

David Preece, Mounir El Haimour, Onome Sodje, Reuben Noble-Lazarus.

Sponsor's Man of the Match: Darren Moore

BarnsleyBoy's Man of the Match: Iain Hume: The only player in red who looked a threat.

PRESTON NORTH END: Lonergan, Davidson, Shumulikoski, Carter, St Ledger, Parry (Sedgwick 73), Jones, Wallace, Parkin (Brown 80), Mellor (Elliott 83).

Subs: Nicholson, Trotman, Henderson.

Most Impressed by Preston's: Jon Parkin & Paul Parry: Cannot stand Parkin's attitude but he showed Odejayi how a target man should play. Parry ALWAYS plays well against us.

Ref Watch: Dean Whitestone: Inconsistent all night but we cant blame him for the result tonight. 4
