This was Barnsley’s seventh away league win of the season, their most in a single season since they also won seven in the 2005-2006 promotion campaign.
Jon Guthrie’s first senior goal for Crewe was only the second first half goal that Barnsley have conceded in 2016. In both that and the previous occasion (Gillingham) they have also been trailing at the break.
Alfie Mawson’s superb free kick winner was his sixth goal of the season making him the highest scoring defender in the Premier or Football League.
After a three game drought Sam Winnall was back on the goal trail, netting his 31st goal in just 61 starts for Barnsley and his 18th of the current campaign. This takes him above Michael Chopra who netted 17 in 2004-2005 and he is the highest Reds scorer in a single season since Bruce Dyer also bagged 18 in 2001-2002. He also moves level on Barnsley goals with Owen Archdeacon (260 starts), Neil Shipperley (82 starts) and Jack Tindall.
In each of the last 10 Barnsley Crewe meetings one team has scored exactly two goals (Barnsley on four occasions, Crewe six)
