Derby County 2-1 Barnsley

Last updated : 15 August 2022 By Rob Miles

Barnsley’s subdued start to life back in League One continued as they fell to the second defeat in the opening three league matches.

It is the third time in six seasons they have lost two of their first three league matches but the first time in five third tier seasons. Interestingly the last time it occurred at this level was 2005-2006 – and Barnsley went on to win promotion via the playoffs that season.

It is the first time since 2019-2020 that Barnsley have lost their opening two away games.

Barnsley have failed to win any of their last eight away league games (D1 L7) – which includes two defeats at Pride Park - and have won only one of the last 27 (including playoffs)

Barnsley have now failed to score a first half goal in any of their opening four matches (all comps) for the first time since 2008-2009 when they didn’t net before half time until the 11th minute of their seventh game.

They have actually gone five successive games without a first half goal and have netted only one in their last 11 outings.

Four games in and we are still waiting for a Barnsley striker to get off the mark for the second successive season.

This is the first time since 2011-2012 that Barnsley have failed to net more than once in any of their first four games.

Derby took the lead from a Conor McCarthy own goal - the first own goal from a Barnsley player since Liam Kitching against Middlesbrough at Oakwell on the 26th February. It is the first away own goal since Victor Adeboyejo put through his own net at Swansea in December 2020.

The own goal at Pride Park came after eight minutes, the earliest Barnsley have conceded since Jordan Rhodes netted after four minutes for Huddersfield in April – it’s the earliest conceded in League One since Jamie Allen netted after five minutes for Burton in April 2019.

Josh Benson brought the Reds back into the contest. Following his winner at Middlesbrough in midweek he is the first Barnsley player to score in successive games since Carlton Morris against Fulham and Bristol City in March.

Barnsley have lost seven of their last eight visits to Derby (W1) and have managed only two wins in their last 20 trips (W2 D4 L14)

In this sequence of 14 defeats this was the fifth to finish 2-1.

Derby manager Liam Rosenior said:

I was delighted with the first half performance and we played some outstanding football. To win games, it’s not just about playing nice football. It’s about standing up and being physical. We’ve spoken a lot about the physical challenge of League One and I think Barnsley are going to be up there at the end of the season. They put on a great performance in the second half, but I have to say Eiran Cashin’s performance was magnificent at the back and he epitomises the group at the moment. It was a hot day, we’ve spoken again about the fitness levels previously, so that will take time but what the players did with their mentality to win was they didn’t stop running, didn’t stop defending and that’s exactly what I’m looking for in terms of the mental toughness of the game.
