Derby County 3-0 Barnsley

Last updated : 14 November 2023 By Rob Miles

Barnsley’s longest unbeaten away start to a season for 27 years came crashing to an end as they suffered their heaviest defeat on the road in any competition for nine months when they also lost 3-0 at…. Derby… in the FA Cup and their heaviest in the league since the final day of 2021-2022 in the Championship when they were hammered 4-0 at West Brom.

This was Barnsley’s heaviest third tier away defeat since August 2015 when they lost 3-0 at Rochdale.

This result also ended a run of 11 away League One games without defeat stretching back to April.

Derby’s opener came from the penalty spot – the fifth league goal the Reds have conceded from this way in 2023-2024, matching the total from 2022-2023.

It is six penalty goals in all competitions, just one short of the 2022-2023 total.

Following the cup draw with Horsham last time out Barnsley have conceded from the penalty spot in successive games for the first time since a run of four games in a row between December 2022 and January 2023, one of which was from Derby’s James Collins in a 3-0 victory just like this weekend.

That was also the last time Barnsley conceded from the spot in successive away games with a 1-1 draw at Accrington last season followed by the 3-0 cup reverse and this season a 1-1 draw at Leyton Orient followed by the 3-0 humbling at Pride Park.

Collins went on to score a brace, the second successive league opponent to do this following Fleetwood’s Junior Quitirna at Oakwell and the first on their own patch since MK Dons Mo Eisa in April, one of which was also a penalty.

This was only the second time Barnsley have failed to score this season (from 20 games all comps), the other being a 1-0 home defeat to Blackpool on the 30th September, it is their first away blank in 10 (not including Wembley) last failing to score on the road in a 0-0 draw at Lincoln on the 18th April.

Barnsley doubled their amount of away league goals conceded this season in this game (having only conceded three from the previous seven) and their tally of six is only bettered by Bolton who have only conceded five.

This was Barnsley’s fourth defeat in their last five meetings with Derby in all competitions (W1) with each of the last two defeats being 3-0 at Pride Park.

There has been 11 goals in the last three clashes between the two sides however the Reds have netted only four of them.

Barnsley have lost nine of their last 10 visits to Derby with the one exception a 2-0 victory at an empty stadium in November 2020 and they have lost each of the last four with an aggregate score of 1-10.

That victory three years ago is their only one in their last 12 trips (W1 D2 L9)
