Gillingham 2-1 Barnsley.

Last updated : 14 February 2016 By Rob Miles (BarnsleyBoy)

All good things come to an end and Barnsley failed to continue their best run of form for 61 years as their seven match winning run ended with this defeat.

They also saw a four match winning streak on the road finish.

Barnsley were behind at half time for the first time in 2016 and the first time they have conceded a first half goal this calendar year. The 2-0 defeat to Wigan on the 19th December was the last time for both.

This ended a run of three successive league clean sheets on the road.

The Reds conceded as many as twice on the road for the first time in six games (at Colchester on the 12th December)

Barnsley have scored in each of their last 10 matches and have only failed to net in one of their last 18 in all competitions.

Sam Winnall is currently on a run of scoring in alternate matches within the last six, so he should be due one against Doncaster next weekend!

Conor Hourihane grabbed The Reds equaliser for his ninth strike of the season- six of them have come on the road.

For the first time in eight matches none of Marley Watkins, Winnall or Adam Hammill scored. At least one had in the past seven league outings.

This was not a game for testing goalkeepers. Gillingham managed only three shots on target, scoring two whilst the third was a parried effort that led to their second and Barnsley managed just two on target, scoring with one.

This was Gillingham’s first victory against Barnsley in seven attempts stretching back to 2001. The Reds had won each of the last six encounters.

Yesterday marked Kevin Long’s final appearance for Barnsley before he returns to Burnley. He made 13 appearances, of which Barnsley won eight.
