Huddersfield Town 2-1 Barnsley

Last updated : 28 October 2019 By Rob Miles

Barnsley's third successive defeat at the John Smith's Stadium plunged the Reds further into relegation danger even at this early stage of the season.

The Yorkshire derby defeat stretches the club's current winless run to 14 games in all competitions (D5 L9), their worst run since 1959 when they went 16 games without victory (D3 L13)

Barnsley have conceded at least two goals now in ten of their 14 league games this season and the 27 goals they have conceded this season is at least one more than anybody else in the Championship.

Barnsley are now winless in eight away league matches (D2 L6) for the first time since December 2013 - March 2014 (also 8 -D3 L5)

They have failed to win any of their first seven away league games of a season for the first time since the same 2013-2014 campaign when they failed to win any of the first nine.

It is the first time in the club's history that they have won their first league game of the season but then failed to win any of the next 13.

Adam Murray is the first Barnsley manager to fail to win any of his first three games in charge (D2 L1) since Danny Wilson in December 2013 who did not find victory until his fifth match (D2 L2)

Barnsley have now won five of their last 45 Championship matches (D15 L25)

Barnsley have gone eight games without a clean sheet for the first time since a run of 11 between February and April 2018.

Barnsley are now winless in four meetings with Huddersfield (D1 L3) and have won only one of thier last six visits to the John Smith's Stadium - 3-1 in the second leg of the League One Play-Off Semi-Final in May 2006.

They have failed to win a regular season league game there since September 2004.

Huddersfield had 55% ball possession meaning Barnsley have had less possession than their opponents in four successive matches for the first time since December/January 2017.

Despite defeat Barnsley had 14 attempts at goal, their most on the road since Plymouth in April.

It is their most on the road in a Championship game since Nottingham Forest in April 2017 (a game they lost 3-0)

Huddersfield manager Danny Cowley said:
"It was an important win, we didn't start well but credit to the players they run themselves into the game.

"At 2-0 up we wasn't ruthless enough and we could have made the game easier for ourselves by getting a third but we rode it out and managed the game with intelligence.

"Only good teams go six unbeaten in the Championship and now we are six unbeaten, the players are rightly very proud of themselves."
