Huddersfield Town 2-1 Barnsley

Last updated : 26 April 2022 By Rob Miles

Relegation has finally been confirmed as a 16th away defeat from 22 games left Barnsley 11 points from safety with only nine left to play for.

It is the 11th time Barnsley have suffered relegation in their history (also in 1932, 1938, 1953, 1959, 1965, 1972, 1998, 2002, 2014, 2018)

However only once before have the Reds been relegated with as many as three matches remaining, the 1952-1953 Third Division campaign when they won only five of 42 matches and finished with 18 points (2 points for a win)

This culminates a remarkable turnaround in 12 months from finishing 5th and in the play-offs to now sit bottom of the league and relegated and Barnsley are only the fifth team to be relegated from the second tier a year after reaching the play-offs following Brighton in 1992 (6th to 23rd), Cambridge in 1993 (5th to 23rd), Leeds in 2007 (5th to 24th) and Wigan in 2015 (5th to 23rd)

As mentioned earlier this was Barnsley’s 16th away league defeat of 2021-2022, the joint most in the division along with Peterborough and it is their most away losses in a season since 2006-2007 when they also lost 16.

Barnsley actually won at Huddersfield 12 months ago, in April 2021, since then they have played 25 away games (all comps) prior to their return visit to the John Smith’s Stadium and won only one (D7 L17) which increased to 18 defeats after this result.

The run of two specific score-lines finally ended following eight out of nine games finishing 1-1 or 2-0 however the Reds were losing 2-0 until the 97th minute when Callum Styles netted a consolation, it’s the latest Barnsley have scored in a game since October 2020 when Cauley Woodrow netted a penalty against Bristol City after 90+12.

Styles goal is the first by a Barnsley substitute since Victor Adeboyejo netted at Fulham on the 20th November.

Ex Barnsley youngster Jordan Rhodes gave Huddersfield the lead after just four minutes, the joint earliest Barnsley have conceded this season (also v Luton in August) it was Rhodes SEVENTH goal against Barnsley in his career.

Following a run of three successive victories against Huddersfield in 2020 and 2021, the Reds have now failed to win any of the last three (D1 L2)

Those three victories are the Reds only ones in the last 10 meetings however.

Last April’s 1-0 victory in West Yorkshire is now Barnsley’s only one at Huddersfield in seven visits, five of which have ended in defeat.

“Unfortunately the scored a goal, but the team was very focussed to defend an important result for us.”
