Barnsley suffered their heaviest defeat of the season at the John Smith’s Stadium but it was not their heaviest against the Terriers. They lost 6-0 to them back in 1952.
It continues Barnsley’s horrendous run on the road. They have the worst away record in the division having picked up just seven points, and they have now won just one of their last 23 away league matches stretching back over a year.
Yesterday was The Reds’ 11th defeat on the road this season, more than they suffered in the whole of 2012-2013 and it is the joint most in the Championship.
The goal difference took another heavy beating and the –26 they now have is the second worst in the division, behind Millwall who have –30.
Overall Barnsley have now won just two of their last 14 matches in all competitions and have slumped back to the foot of the table. Remarkably though they are still just two points adrift of safety after fourth bottom Millwall extending their terrible run to one win in 15 with defeat to Brighton. At this stage of the season last year Bristol City were bottom with five more points than Barnsley have now but were six points off safety!
The team who has been bottom of the Championship at the start of March has ended up relegated in each of the last 10 seasons. Stoke in 2002-2003 were the last team to survive.
Emmanuel Frimpong continues to rack up the cautions. He now has four yellow cards and one red from just five appearances. The only game he has now received a card in was the 2-2 draw at Doncaster.
Huddersfield managed a home win for just the second time in four games and won for only the third time in nine overall. This was their biggest win since a 6-0 triumph at Wycombe in January 2012 and their biggest at home since 2010.
