Wigan Athletic 1-1 Barnsley

Last updated : 30 March 2025 By Robert Miles

·       The season continues to limp on to its inevitable midtable finish as the Reds were pegged back to draw for the second league game in a row.

·       It was only the second time Barnsley have been involved in a stalemate away from home in League One this season, the other also being 1-1, at Cambridge in November.

·       It is their third away draw in all competitions in 2024-2025, all three of which have been 1-1 and two have been at Wigan following a League Cup tie there in August.

·       It was also only the second time Barnsley have had back to back league games this season, also occurring v Stockport and Wycombe in September/October, both of which were at Oakwell and both finished 2-2.

·       The game had started off brightly for the Reds with Davis Keillor-Dunn curling home a beautiful freekick after just eight minutes, the earliest Barnsley have netted since Keillor-Dunn himself scored after seven minutes in a 2-2 draw against Reading on the 26th November.

·       It is the earliest Barnsley have netted on the road since Devante Cole scored after six minutes in a 3-2 defeat Portsmouth on the 16th April 2024.

·       It was Keillor-Dunn’s 14th league goal of the season, only four players have netted more in League One.

·       Of the 16 goals he has scored in all competitions this season this was the eighth which opened the scoring in a game.

·       Conor McCarthy received a yellow card after 90 minutes meaning Barnsley have now received 17 cards of some colour in the 90th minute or later.

·       Fabio Jalo made his 14th appearance of the season and his first ever start, he has been shown four yellow cards in those 14 games.

·       Captain Luca Connell has now made 97 league appearances for the club but this was only the sixth one to come from the bench and first since the 1st February against Burton.

·       Three of the four meetings between Barnsley and Wigan have finished 1-1, two of which have occurred this season.

·       They have drawn five of the last nine clashes.

·       The home team has failed to net more than once in each of the last seven meetings, whereas the away side has only managed it once in that run.

·       The Reds have now lost only one of the last seven clashes.

·       This stalemate edges draws ahead overall with this the eighth, compared with seven Wigan wins and six Barnsley wins.

·       Barnsley are unbeaten in their last four trips to Wigan (W2 D2) and have lost only one of the last seven (W4 D2 L1)

·       There has been a total of 11 shots on target in three of Barnsley’s last four matches.

·       Barnsley won only one corner, their lowest in a league game this season and lowest since this exact weekend last season – failing to win a single corner against Cambridge on the 29th March 2024.

·       There were 27 fouls, the most in 17 matches since there were 30 at Bolton on Boxing Day.
