Birmingham City 6-2 Barnsley

Last updated : 07 April 2025 By Robert Miles

Barnsley conceded six goals in a league game for the first time in 12 years as their win-less run extended to their worst run of form for three years.

This was the first league outing in which the Reds have been hit for six since losing 6-0 to Charlton in the Championship in April 2013.

It is the first time they have conceded six on the road in the league for 15 years when they lost 6-1 at Newcastle in March 2010

It is the first time they have conceded six in a third tier game for 21 years when they lost 6-1 at Grimsby in February 2004.

It is the first time Barnsley have been involved in a 6-2 scoreline for 47 years when they defeated Port Vale 6-2 on Boxing Day 1978.

This result extends the winless run to seven matches, their worst league run since failing to win any of the last nine of the 2021-2022 Championship campaign.

Its their worst run at this level since losing eight in a row between October and November 2015.

This was Barnsley’s 17th League One defeat of the season, their most at this level since losing 18 in 2014-2015 when they finished 11th.

This result means Barnsley have conceded at least four goals in two League One games in the same season for the first time since 2014-2015 when they lost 5-3 to MK Dons and 5-1 to Crawley.

The game started off in the worst possible fashion as centre back Mael de Gevigney collected his second red card in six appearances after just three minutes – becoming the first Barnsley player to be sent off twice in a season since Ryan Shotton in 2009-2010.

The dismissal saw Jonathan Bland come on for Max Watters after just eight minutes, Barnsley’s earliest substitution since Watters was again taken off after just eight minutes at Cambridge in November.

Jay Stansfield opened the scoring with a penalty, the sixth time this season Barnsley have conceded from the spot (all competitions)

It was Stansfield’s third goal in two appearances against Barnsley having netted a brace in the Oakwell meeting in December.

Davis Keillor-Dunn did bring it back to 1-1 with his 20th direct league goal involvement (15 goals, 5 assists), only Birmingham’s Alfie May who netted a brace in this game has more – (22, 14 goals, eight assists)

It was the 15th different game Keillor-Dunn has netted in for the Reds and this is only the second time Barnsley have gone on to lose.

It is the first time Keillor-Dunn and Stephen Humphrys have both scored in the same game.

Humphrys has now scored in successive games after going 23 games without one.

It is the second time this season he has netted in back to back games whilst his only other two goals for the club came in the space of three games.

Despite this humbling scoreline it was the first time Barnsley have scored more than once in a game in seven outings.

As mentioned earlier Alfie May netted a brace, the second successive season he has done this against Barnsley having also bagged a brace against them for Charlton last season.

Lukas Jutkiewicz completed the scoring with his fourth goal for Birmingham against Barnsley since signing for the club nine years ago.

Barnsley conceded five second half goals in a league game for the first time in 14 years since a 5-3 home defeat to Ipswich in December 2011.

This was only the second time Birmingham have conceded more than once at home in a league game since season – the other occasion being a 3-2 victory over Peterborough in September.

Barnsley have now lost three successive meetings with Birmingham for the first time since a run of six between May 2000 and November 2006.

This wasn’t Barnsley’s heaviest defeat against the Blues having lost 5-0 to them on three occasions but it is the first time they have ever conceded six goals to the Midlands outfit.

The Reds have lost on three of their last four visits to St Andrews, having been unbeaten in five prior.

One team has scored exactly two goals in each of the last five St Andrews’ clashes.

·       Birmingham enjoyed 62.8% ball possession,  only two sides have had more in a League One game against the Reds this season – Crawley (68.9% in August and Burton (63.1% in September) – both games with Barnsley won.

·       Birmingham had a total of 21 shots, the most by an opponent in a league game this season.

·       There has however been a total of 29 shots in each of Barnsley’s last two games.

·       Birmingham nine shots on target are also the most by a league opponent whilst only Huddersfield (17) won more than their 11 corners.
