Lincoln City 1-2 Barnsley - TykesMAD

Lincoln City 1-2 Barnsley

Last updated : 18 August 2024 By Rob Miles

Barnsley got 2024-2025 up and running with an impressive victory in their first away League One game of the season.

It is the first time Barnsley have won their opening away league game of a season since 2018-2019 when they won both their opening home and away game.

That was also the last season Barnsley scored twice in their opening away league game.

It is only the second time in 10 years the Reds have won their opening away league game, also doing so in 2014-2015.

In all competitions Barnsley are unbeaten in their opening two away games for the second successive season.

Barnsley have had all three results in their opening three matches, a defeat against Mansfield, a draw at Wigan and a win at Lincoln, the first time this has occurred in the opening three games since 2015-2016 when it also came in the same order and competitions as this season.

This win ended a run of four successive away league defeats in a regular season which is how they ended 2023-2024, however they did win the away leg in the play-offs at Bolton.

Lincoln’s consolation goal means Barnsley have gone 13 away games in all competitions without a clean sheet, stretching back to January and a 1-0 win at Oxford which is their only away clean sheet in 2024 and one of only two overall this calendar year.

They have now scored in 20 successive away league games (including playoffs) their longest streak since a 23 game run from October 1933 to September 1934.

This is the second time in three seasons that Barnsley’s opening home and away league has produced the same scoreline (2-1 defeat and 2-1 win) also happening in 2022-2023 when they lost 1-0 at Plymouth and then defeated Cheltenham by the same score.

Sam Cosgrove’s opener was his seventh goal for the club, five of which have come away from home.

Marc Roberts’ game clinching header was his first Barnsley goal in seven years since scoring in a 2-0 Championship win at Blackburn in April 2017.

This was Barnsley’s first victory in six meetings with Lincoln and their first league success in 11 dating back to 1973.

After a 4-1 Oakwell win in April 1973, the three victories they had managed against the Imps in the following 16 meetings had all come in the League Cup.

This was Barnsley’s first league victory at Lincoln in six such visits dating back to December 1972 (D3L2) however they are unbeaten in their last five visits in all competitions (W3 D2)

Out of Barnsley’s last five regular season wins this was the first in which they have had less than 50% ball possession.

Despite scoring twice Barnsley only managed six shots, their lowest amount for 42 matches since also only managing six in a 1-1 draw with Leyton Orient in October 2023.

It is their lowest amount in a match they have gone on to win since December 2022 when they only had four in a 2-1 away win at Peterborough.

Three of those shots were on target, their lowest in a winning effort since the 1st April when all three went in during a 3-1 victory at Burton.
