Mansfield Town 2-1 Barnsley

Last Updated : 17-Mar-2025 by Rob Miles

  • This wretched season hit a new low as Barnsley lost to the side with the current longest winless run in the Football League – enduring a third successive league defeat and fifth in eight games whilst ending Mansfield’s 13 match winless streak which had included nine defeats.
  • This is the second time this season the Reds have had two separate runs of three successive league defeats, the first time this has occurred at this level since their first third tier season for 21 years in 2002-2003.
  • This was the 15th league defeat of the season (they now have the same amount of defeats as they do wins) their most in the third tier since 2015-2016 when they lost 16.
  • It is the joint most league defeats amongst the top 14 teams in the division (Leyton Orient in 9th and Rotherham in 14th have also lost 14)
  • Following Mansfield’s opening goal Jackson Smith was forced off after suffering a hamstring injury in attempting to save the effort, this led to a senior debut for 21 year old Kieran Flavell -  the FIFTH different goalkeeper to have appeared in a league game this season after Gabriel Slonina (11 appearances), Joe Gauci (4), Ben Killip (17) and Jackson Smith (5)– the most to appear for Barnsley in a league season since 2003-2004 when SIX goalkeepers Sasa Ilic (25), Marlon Beresford (14), Tony Caig (3), Ross Turnbull (3), Gavin Ward (1) and Danny Alcock (1) all featured in a third tier game.
  • Smith came on as a 75th minute replacement for Gauci at Rotherham on the 22nd February, this is the first time Barnsley have had to make two substitutes involving a goalkeeper in a season since 2006-2007 when it occurred on three occasions - Vito Mannone came on for Nick Colgan after eight minutes following a red card for the Irishman at Preston in September 2006, David Lucas came on at half time for Colgan against Hull in February 2007 and then Colgan replaced Lucas after 55 minutes against Derby in March 2007.
  • Josh Benson on his first league start in 17 months (since a 1-1 draw at Leyton Orient in October 2023) grabbed an equaliser with his first league goal for the club since September 2022. It is only his sixth goal for the club in all competitions since signing in the summer of 2021.
  • It was set up by Davis Keillor-Dunn – only his second assist of the season (both of which have come in the last four games) however his 16th direct goal involvement in 2024-2025 (14 goals 2 assists) taking him one clear of Adam Phillips (10 goals, 5 assists)
  • This was the fourth league game in which Barnsley have lost it in the 90th minute or later.
  • It was the sixth league game they have lost 2-1, the most in a season since 2021-2022 (also 6)
  • It is the 14th Barnsley league game this season to finish 2-1 – 38% - two of those have been against Mansfield.
  • Barnsley lost only three of their first 12 away league games this season but have lost five of seven since.
  • It means they have won more away league games (10) that anybody else in League One this season  but their total of eight defeats is only better than eight other teams.
  • Barnsley have now conceded 53 league goals, six more than in the entirety of the play-off final season of 2022-2023 and FOURTEEN more than in the entirety of the promotion season of 2018-2019.
  • Barnsley have now conceded seven second half goals in their past four matches, whilst there has now been a staggering 67 second half goals in Barnsley’s 37 league games this season – 64% of the 101 in total.
  • Barnsley now have a -2 goal difference, their worst after 37 games of a third tier season since 2003-2004 (also -2)
  • Barnsley have lost three of their last four meetings with the Stags spread across 23 years.
  • This was Mansfield’s third ever league double over Barnsley having also completed the feat in 1964-1965 and 1974-1975.
  • This was however Barnsley’s first defeat in four visits to Mansfield (W2 D1 L1) and they had kept clean sheets in each of the previous two.
  • Both of Barnsley’s last two opponents (Blackpool and Mansfield) have had 18 shots in the game.
  • There has also been a total of 11 shots on target in each of Barnsley’s last two games.
  • Both Barnsley and their opponent have had the same amount of corners for the second time this season, both Barnsley and Mansfield had five whilst both the Reds and Crawley had four back in January.
