Middlesbrough 1-0 Barnsley

Last updated : 28 November 2019 By Rob Miles

It's an 11th defeat from 18 Championship games. It is the quickest they have reach double figures for defeats since 2015-2016 when they suffered an 11th reverse in their 17th game - of course Barnsley went on to win promotion at the end of that campaign!

The club's current winless run stretches to 18 games in all competitions (D6 L12), their worst run since 1953 when they went 21 matches without a victory - failing to win any of their final 18 matches of 1952-1953 and the first three of 1953-1954 (D6 L15)

If you are looking for a small positive, this was only the fifth time this season (from 19 games) that Barnsley have managed to concede less than twice (also v Fulham, Wigan, Nottingham Forest and Swansea)

The Reds have gone 12 games without a clean sheet, their longest run since a run of 20 between 3rd October 2015 and 9th January 2016 (4 Football League Trophy games, 1 FA Cup, 15 League One)

Barnsley have picked up just two points on the road this season, the lowest amount in the division, it is the first time they have failed to win any of their first nine away league matches since 2001-2002 when they failed to win any of their first 12 (D3 L9), not tasting victory on the road that season until Boxing Day.

They have gone a total of 10 league away games without a win (D2 L8) for the first time since a run of 15 from 23rd February 2013 to 23rd November 2013 (D6 L9)

Barnsley have now won five of their last 49 Championship matches (D16 L28)

For the seventh time this season Barnsley had the most ball possession in a match they lost (also v Sheffield Wednesday, Birmingham, Luton, Nottingham Forest, Stoke and Blackburn)

Ashley Fletcher scored the only goal thus ending Middlesbrough's 10 match winless run, he is the third ex Red to score against them this season (after Ben Pearson and Jacob Butterfield) the most in one season since 2017-2018 (3 - Conor Hourihane, Josh Scowen, Josh Brownhill)

It was only the 18th goal he has scored since the end of his loan spell at Oakwell in 2016.

Gerhard Struber has lost his first two games in charge, the first Barnsley manager to do this since David Flitcroft who lost his first two at home to Blackburn and then at Peterborough.

Middlesbrough have won three home league matches in a row against Barnsley for the first time since February 1984 (four in a row).

Barnsley are winless in five matches against Middlesbrough across all competitions (W0 D1 L4), since winning 3-2 in October 2013.

Barnsley avoided any bookings in a match for only the second time this season (also v Brentford)
