Middlesbrough 3-1 Barnsley

Last updated : 27 April 2014 By Rob Miles (BarnsleyBoy)

Defeat today confirms Barnsley’s relegation to League One and ends their eight-year stay in the Championship.

The Reds now reside five points adrift of safety with just one match remaining after a fifth defeat in seven matches.

Danny Wilson becomes the first Barnsley manager to be relegated twice with the club, and it hurts even more that this was confirmed exactly 17 years to the day that Wilson led the side to the Premier League.

It is Barnsley’s ninth relegation in their history, compared with eight promotions.

Barnsley can only now gain 10 wins this season. If they do not beat QPR next weekend it will give them their first single figure amount of wins in the Football League since 1971/1972 when they also only managed nine.

Today was Barnsley’s 24th league defeat this season, the joint most in the Championship along with bottom side Yeovil. Should the Glovers better Barnsley’s result next Saturday The Reds will finish bottom of a division for the first time since 1964/1965.

Those two injury time goals conceded this afternoon also means The Reds have conceded the joint most goals in the division along with Millwall (74) and they have the worst goal difference (-32)

Barnsley lost a league match after going 1-0 up for only the second time this season. The only other occasion was the 5-2 defeat at Blackburn in August. In that game, The Reds led for four minutes, today it lasted less than one.

The stark reality for Barnsley supporters is that the club were bottom of the table after the first game and their highest position of the season was 21st (for one week) back in September.

A striker has scored just one of Barnsley’s last six goals; three have been netted by defenders, two of those from Jean-Yves Mvoto.

Remarkably four of the division’s bottom six sides lost 3-1 today.
