Morecambe 1-0 Barnsley

Last updated : 24 October 2022 By Rob Miles

The first ever league meeting between Morecambe and Barnsley ended in defeat for the Reds at the bottom of the table Shrimpers who won for only the second time in League One this season and for the first time at home.

This defeat ended Barnsley’s six game unbeaten away run in all competitions and after winning four in a row (home and away, all comps) they have won only one of the following four (W1 D2 L1)

The Reds have gone three League One games without a win (D1 L2) for the first time this season and first time at this level since a run of four between November and December 2018 (D2 L2)

Barnsley have now lost two of their three meetings with Morecambe in all competitions – the two previous clashes were in the first round of the League Cup with this the first ever meeting in Morecambe.

This was Barnsley’s fifth league defeat of the season and they have failed to score themselves in four of them (the one exception being the 2-1 defeat at Derby)

They have gone three league games without scoring for the first time since January/February 2022.

There were 5,270 in attendance, Morecambe’s biggest home crowd of 2022-2023 and biggest in their own stadium since their final home game of 2021-2022 when 5,831 saw them lose 1-0 to Sunderland.

There has only been a total of seven shots on target across Barnsley’s last two games and the Reds have restricted their opponents to just one on both occasions.

Morecambe are the second side to score against Barnsley with their own shot on target this season with Charlton being the other.

They have now restricted four teams to just one shot on target (Charlton, Fleetwood, Bolton, Morecambe) whilst Bristol Rovers failed to hit the target at all.

Barnsley won six corners, their joint most of the season (also at Plymouth) both have occurred in 1-0 away defeats.

"We stopped them playing and we obviously had opportunities in the game as well."
