Peterborough United 0-1 Barnsley

Last Updated : 07-Dec-2025 by Robert Miles

Barnsley made it into the Third Round of the FA Cup for the first time in three years as they put the horror show of the midweek Vertu Trophy exit behind them with only their third clean sheet of the season.

Two of the shut-outs have come in 1-0 wins at Peterborough after also winning by this scoreline at the Weston Homes Stadium in the league back in August.

This was Barnsley's first FA Cup away clean sheet since a 3-0 win at non-league Horsham in a First Round replay in 2023-2024 and their first against league opposition since a 0-0 draw in the Third Round at Blackpool in 2016-2017.

Barnsley have now won one away FA Cup tie in each of the last four years, last failing to win an away tie in 2021-2022 when they suffered a Fourth Round 1-0 defeat at Huddersfield.

Since returning to League One in 2022 Barnsley have played 191 matches in all competitions with this only the 13th 1-0 win, nine of which have  come away.

This was Barnsley's first away win in the FA Cup against an opponent in the same division since a Third Round win at Bolton in 2022-2023 and the first with a clean sheet since a 1-0 win at Hull City in the Fourth Round of 2012-2013.

This is the second time Barnsley have won 1-0 at Peterborough this season, the first time Barnsley have beaten the same opponent on their patch twice in a season since 2018-2019 when they won 4-2 at Southend in the Second Round of the FA Cup and then returned to Roots Hall three months later to win 3-0 in League One.

A substitute has scored in three of Barnsley's last four away games with Patrick Kelly being the scorer on two of those occasions.

It is also the second year in a row a substitute has scored in the FA Cup following Adam Phillips netting at Port Vale in the First Round.

There were two players making their first appearances for a significant period of time, Fabio Jalo entered the field for the first time since the 21st April (ironically also against Peterborough) whilst Georgie Gent appeared for the first time since the 1st March against Lincoln and played the full game for the first time since the 4th January v Crawley.

The winning goal was set up, on a plate, by Neil Farrugia, his third assist of the season - only Reyes Cleary (6) has set up more in 2025-2026.

Barnsley had five players booked, their most in a game this season and most since the 28th January at Wycombe - 42 games ago.

It is their most in a FA Cup game since a 2-1 First Round win at Bolton in 2022-2023 (also 5)

Barnsley had two substitutes booked (Kelly and Connell) for the first time since the opening day at Plymouth (Bland and Russell)

Two of the yellows (for Connell and Kelly) occurred in second half injury time, the second time this season Barnsley have received two bookings after 90 minutes - also at home to Bolton in August.

This was Barnsley’s 20th win against Peterborough meaning both sides have beaten the other on 20 occasions, with eight draws.

The Reds have won three of the past four meetings and are unbeaten in five.

Barnsley have won 1-0 twice at Posh this season, the only times they have won by this scoreline there whilst also winning 1-0 at Oakwell in December 1993, March 2012 and April 2016.

The away side has scored exactly one goal in each of the last three meetings whilst the home side has not scored more than once in any of the last four and have managed it only once in the last ten.

This was the first ever FA Cup meeting between Barnsley and Peterborough however is the fifth cup meeting overall with Barnsley winning three (D1 L1)

Barnsley have now won three successive meetings at the Weston Homes Stadium and are unbeaten in seven visits (W5 D2)

It isn’t their best run at the home of the Posh however as they won four successive visits between November 2002 and December 2011.

Overall the Reds have won nine of their 15 visits in the 21st Century, remarkable considering they lost each of their first six.

In both meetings this season Peterborough had seven shots and only one on target.
