Port Vale 2-1 Barnsley

Last updated : 25 November 2022 By Rob Miles

One route to Wembley has closed as Barnsley’s Papa John’s Trophy run ended at the first knockout stage.

It was only Barnsley’s second defeat in 17 outings in this competition (excluding penalty shootouts) and both have come in this season’s competition.

However, apart from back in 2015-2016 when they won the competition in it’s guise as the Johnstones Paint Trophy and were unbeaten in seven knockout ties (winning four inside 90minutes) they have won only one other knockout tie without the need for a penalty shootout in their history of the competition (from eight other knockout ties played)

This was only Barnsley’s second away defeat in 10 outings (all comps)

It is their first away defeat in this competition in eight such matches (W5 D2) – a 2-0 defeat at Oldham in October 2014.

This was the first time in eight outings (home or away) in which Barnsley have conceded more than one goal and that previous occasion also occurred in the Papa John’s Trophy (a 4-2 win at Doncaster.

They have conceded more than once in three of their Papa John’s Trophy games this season, the first time it has occurred in as many as three Barnsley games in this competition in the same season.

Barnsley were 2-0 down at half time for only the third time this season and two have occurred in this competition.

Captain Mads Andersen was an unused substitute for Barnsley for the first time in 12 months (6th November 2021 v Hull)

Barnsley have now won only two of their last 14 meetings with Port Vale (D4 L8)

However in overall meetings this victory edged Vale ahead 47 wins to 46.

The Reds have won only one of the last 10 meetings at Vale Park stretching back to 1996 and have lost six of the last seven (a 1-0 win in 2016 the exception)

This was the second time the two sides have met in this competition and Port Vale have won both meetings – also 1-0 in the LDV Vans Trophy in September 2004.

There were only ten shots in this match (five each) the lowest in a Barnsley for almost exactly a year to the day – on the 24th November 2021 there were only nine in a clash with Swansea.

Only in three of Barnsley’s last nine matches has an opponent managed more than one shot on target and all three have been in cup matches (Doncaster -4 and Port Vale – 3 in the Papa John’s and Bolton – 3 in the FA Cup)

On this occasion it was the Reds who managed only one effort on target (which they scored from) their lowest number of shots on target since the Papa John’s game against Lincoln at Oakwell (0)
