Reading 1-3 Barnsley.

A massive victory for Barnsley, which keeps their survival hopes very much alive. Now all three teams in the relegation zone- Yeovil, Barnsley and Millwall have 32 points, with Charlton three points above in fourth bottom after a 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest.

A team with the worst away record in the Football League won for only the second time on the road this season and only the second time in 25 away games overall.

Barnsley scored more goals last night than they had managed in their previous seven combined. They had managed just two strikes in the last seven matches and had failed to score in four of their last five.

It was only the second time this season they have managed to score as many as three goals in one game, and the first time away from home since the 23rd  February last year, when they lost 5-3 at Bristol City.

This was Barnsley’s biggest away win since the 5-0 thumping of Birmingham in September 2012.

Lewin Nyatanga finally put to bed his horrendous recent record. Last night was the first time in 15 matches he has managed to be on the winning side. (seven for Barnsley and eight for Bristol City) His last victory had come back on the 9th March 2013.

Manager Danny Wilson has been waiting much longer between Barnsley away wins. This was his first since the 11th March 1998 when his Premier League outfit beat Aston Villa 1-0 at Villa Park. He had gone 11 since as Reds boss without winning- eight of which have been lost.

Barnsley showed some much needed bouncebackability. This was the first time in exactly a year that The Reds have gone 1-0 up, been pegged back to 1-1 but still gone on to win.

Stephen Dawson and Reuben Noble-Lazarus notched The Reds first two goals. The last time this happened was in a 2-2 draw at Leicester back in December 2012. On that day, the Foxes equalised with a last minute goal…. Just as they did against Yeovil last night.

This victory continued The Reds recent good record at Reading. Despite being only their seventh win there in 35 visits, it was a third victory from the previous five and they have lost just two of the last 11 trips to either Elm Park or the Madejski Stadium.

Remarkably, in four of the last eight meetings at Reading, the home side have been awarded a penalty. They were awarded two last season but missed one of them. On each occasion it has been their only goal of the game.

Emmanuel Frimpong made his eighth appearance for the club since signing from Arsenal…. And picked up his fifth yellow card.

Luke Steele made his 200th league appearance for Barnsley last night. He has travelled to the Madejski six times with the Reds and lost just twice.
