Here's One For You…..

Last updated : 23 September 2007 By Rob Miles (barnsley Boy)

Very little I hear you cry.

Chelsea are bankrolled by a billionaire chairman whilst Barnsley's annual wage bill probably doesn't come near what John Terry takes home every WEEK!

But there is one similarity between the 2007 and 1912 FA Cup Winners (apart from that of course)

It's the fact that both chairmen- Roman Abramovich and Gordon Shepherd sacked managers classed as legends by the fans- simply because they weren't doing as they were told.

I shall go on. Both Abramovich and Shepherd then replaced these legends with virtual unknowns, people that fans of both clubs said were hired because they would do as the puppet master commanded.

That's where the similarity ends however.

Because down at Oakwell, little known Simon Davey might just be building a dynasty.

On Tuesday 21st November 2006 Davey's life changed dramatically.

He went from being a little known guy in charge of the kids to the most hated man at Barnsley Football Club! And why? For doing what Avram Grant has been asked to do at Stamford Bridge- Replace a legend.

I myself was one of the MAJORITY that wanted Davey out before he had even sat at his desk.

His impact was instant- Getting only the club's second win in 12 games and first clean sheet in 12. And then repeating the trick in the following game. But in all honesty we could have beaten both Ipswich and Southend 12-0 and it still wouldn't matter to us fans in mourning. 1-0 and 2-0 was never going to win his trust.

The malice though set in. Even though results under Ritchie had been poor, when he departed he had lost 8 of his last 10 games and not managed a clean sheet since September 16th, it didn't really matter. Ritchie had achieved his untouchable place by leading the side out of the cesspit of League One, playing attractive football to boot.

Even though Davey inherited those same players and wins inevitable went back to defeats, he was vilified for it. These weren't his players but it didn't matter Welshman Simon Davey wasn't OUR man.

A crushing 3-0 home defeat to Sheffield Wednesday, coupled with the news Davey had landed the manager's post 24 hrs later made the disgust even stronger.

But Davey held his head. Chants for Ritchie to return during a 2-0 cup defeat to Southend didn't make him wilt or change his stance. His aim was survival and with the team 23rd when he came in back in November, survival was all he was concerned about.

Fans started to smile a little when Davey went all Hungarian and Istvan Ferenczi scored crucial goals against Hull, Stoke and Plymouth to earn 9 vital points.

A shock 1-0 home win over eventually promoted Birmingham raised eyebrows once more.

Simon probably even raised a wiry smile when chants of "There's Only One Simon Davey" echoed from a shed at Roots Hall as a 3-1 win over Southend all but secured another season of Championship football.

Defeats to Leicester and West Brom (7-0) in the final two games however shut those chants up.

Over the summer fans were still concerned. Davey had eked out results the hard, gritty way. The attacking Ritchie football had long gone. Fans really couldn't stomach another season of that.

Undeterred Simon rebuilt.

Out went players woefully inept at this level, Marc Richards, Neil Austin, Paul Heckingbottom- players who lets be honest had been handed a free Championship ride last season. The fact Austin and Heckingbottom have dropped all the way down to League Two tells its own story.

In total 14 new players have come in- most from overseas and the carefully built deck of cards crashed in the first game of the new season as Coventry came to Oakwell and walked away with a 4-1 win.

A jittery draw with Colchester and nearly snatching defeat from the jaws of victory with a 3-2 triumph over Plymouth didn't settle many nerves, so you can imagine how a 2-0 defeat at West Brom felt.

But the last three games have opened a lot of eyes. A 2-0 win over Scunthorpe, a 0-0 draw at Stoke and Mission Impossible- a 3-2 win at Southampton.

I'm not saying Davey should have won everybody round with those results, far from it. 3 results doesn't make a manager or a season. But it's been 22 years since a Barnsley side triumphed at Southampton- its certainly not being 22 years since a Barnsley side conceded an equaliser in the 90th minute.

This article might be worthless if we get walloped by Cardiff at the weekend- I'm half expecting it now after writing this!

But hand on heart - looking at the table and seeing us 7th after 7 games with 11points (We were 17th without a home win at this stage last season) don't things look a whole lot rosy than back on that dark Tuesday morning in November. At least some of that must be down to that Welshman dressed smartly in the dugout.

So come on, I call you all to raise a clap to Simon Davey on Saturday, Win Lose Or Draw and maybe lets here that "There's Only One Simon Davey" chant again.

There's probably not a lot Chelsea could learn from Barnsley, but Avram Grant could learn a thing or two from Simon Davey

BarnsleyBoy.
