Tonight is not the first time the two teams have met recently in a Cup tie… nor is it the second. Barnsley and Darlington are actually becoming quite acquainted as this is the third time in the last four years in which they have met in a cup competition- with Barnsley winning the previous two.

They met at this stage in the League Cup back in 2004-2005 at the aptly named 96.6 TFM Darlington Arena. Barnsley triumphed 2-0 that evening thanks to goals from Chris Shuker on 14 minutes and a Paul Reid penalty on 75minutes

DARLINGTON: Russell, Kendrick, Fleming, Hutchinson, Close, Keltie (Maddison 75), Clark, Clarke (Scatascini 65), C. Russell, Wainwright, Hughes (Convery 75).

Subs: Price, Thomas.

BARNSLEY: Colgan, Hassell, Williams, Reid, Vaughan, Carbon, Conlon (Stallard 84), Boulding (Nardiello 78), Kay, Wroe, Shuker.

Subs: Scarsella, Austin, Onibuje.

As we all know though The Reds were then hammered 7-1 at Manchester City in the Second Round.

MANCHESTER CITY: Waterreus, Thatcher (Jordan 45), Distin (Sommiel 45), Sibierski, Macken (B. Wright-Phillips 45), Jihai, Mills, Barton, Bosvelt, Wright-Phillips, Flood.

Subs: Ellgaard, Croft.

BARNSLEY: Colgan, Hassell, T. Williams, Burns, Chopra, Conlon, McPhail, Kay, Wroe, Shuker (Nardiello 65), R. Williams (Boulding 31).

Subs: Scarsella, Stallard, Tonge.

Barnsley and Darlington then met the following year (2005-2006) in the First Round of the FA Cup at Oakwell with Barnsley triumphing 1-0 courtesy of a Paul Hayes strike after just 5 minutes.

BARNSLEY: Colgan, Hassell, Hayes (Nardiello 71), McPhail, Howard, Austin, Kay (Williams 45), Shuker (Jarman 45), Tonge, Richards, Devaney.

Subs: Flinders, Laight.

DARLINGTON: Russell, Valentine, Kendrick, Appleby, Clark, Wainwright, Dickman (Stamp 74), Johnson, Martis, Sodje, Peacock (Ndumbu Nsungu 65).

Subs: Close, Maddison, Wright.

Barnsley then hammered Bradford 5-3 in a replay after a 2-2 draw in the Second Round before limping to a 2-0 replay defeat at Walsall after a 1-1 draw in the Third Round.

Aside from those two meetings Barnsley and Darlington have met in cup competitions another eight times with Darlington yet to register a victory.

Altogether the two sides have played each other in League Cup matches 5 times with the following record:

2004/2005

Tue 24 Aug Darlington 0 - 2 Barnsley

1994/1995

Tue 23 Aug Barnsley 0 - 0 Darlington (after extra time, 90 minutes 0-0, aggregate 2-2, Barnsley won on away goals rule)

Wed 17 Aug Darlington 2 - 2 Barnsley

1963/1964

Wed 11 Sep Barnsley 6 - 2 Darlington

Wed 04 Sep Darlington 2 - 2 Barnsley

In terms of records in the League Cup, Barnsley have gone out in the Second Round in each of the last three seasons and the furthest The Reds have ever gone in this competition is the Quarter Finals where they met the mighty Liverpool in 1982.

After a fantastic 0-0 draw at Anfield, Barnsley were beaten 3-1 at Oakwell in the

replay.
