Head To Head

Barnsley have a tough task as they head to promoted West Brom in the season’s finale on Sunday. The Reds have lost their last four matches at the Hawthorns, including a 7-0 thumping when the two sides also met on the final day of 2006-2007.

That game was chosen for SKY coverage as the Baggies needed to win to ensure their place in the play-offs and Barnsley- already safe after Leeds’ relegation the previous weekend- didn’t put up much of a fight. West Brom were 4-0 up by half time, and sailed through the game with Kevin Phillips bagging a hat-trick, Nathan Ellington a brace and further strikes from Robert Koren and Zoltan Gera. Albion would lose 1-0 to Derby in the Play-Off Final, whilst seven of the 16 man Barnsley squad that day never played for the club again.

Teams:

West Brom: Kiely, McShane (Hodgkiss, 46 ) , Perry, Sam Sodje, Robinson, Greening, Chaplow, Koren, Koumas (Gera, 54 ) , Ellington (MacDonald, 62 ) , Phillips

Barnsley: Lucas, Austin, Atkinson, Potter, Hassell, Devaney ( McCann, 57 ) , Howard, Togwell ( Heslop, 63 ) , Reid, Nardiello, Ferenczi ( Rajczi, 57 )
Subs not used: Colgan, Heckingbottom,

That result is one of two defeats suffered by Barnsley at West Brom since their return to the Championship in 2006. They lost 2-0 there the following season, with a certain Filipe Teixeira and Craig Beattie getting the goals. That though would be Barnsley’s last defeat for the next eight games.

West Brom: Kiely, Hoefkens, Barnett, Albrechtsen, Robinson, Teixeira (Chaplow, 79 ) , Greening, Gera, Morrison (Brunt, 65 ) , Beattie (Miller, 64 ) , Phillips

Barnsley: Muller, Nyatanga, Foster, Guedes, Kozluk, Johnson ( McCann, 60 ) , De Silva, Howard, Werling ( Kim Christensen, 80 ) , Odejayi, Ferenczi ( Ricketts, 50 )
Subs not used: Colgan, Mostto,

They have also suffered a 3-1 defeat in March 2002 (Jordao, Danny Dichio and Trevor Benjamin scoring for Albion, a Darren Barnard penalty for The Reds) and 1-0 on New Years Day 2001, since their last victory there. That was a 2-0 success in January 2000 thanks to a brace from Barnard.

Another notable Hawthorns success came on the opening day of the famous 1996-1997 season. The Reds won 2-1 thanks to goals from Clint Marcelle and Andy Liddell. That victory was the first of five in a row at the start of that season as they won promotion to the Premier League for the first and so far only time in the club’s history.

Those results however are nothing compared to the most famous win over West Brom in the club’s history. It was the Baggies who The Reds defeated 1-0 on the 24th April 1912 to win the FA Cup. Harry Tufnell striking two minutes before the end of extra time in the replay at Bramall Lane to give the Reds their most famous piece of silverware to date.

Barnsley are MUCH better at home against the Baggies, and are unbeaten in the last 17 meetings at Oakwell, winning four of the last five, including a 3-1 success back in October. Adam Hammill, Iain Hume and a Shelton Martis own goal inflicted on Albion one of only three defeats that they have suffered on the road this season. The last Albion victory at Oakwell was 1-0 way back in 1947!

This Season:

West Brom have once again lived up to their boing boing Baggies tag by bouncing back into the Premier League. For the last 10 seasons the Baggies have either been in bottom four of the Premier League or top six of the Championship, and after a bottom place finish in England’s top table in 2008-2009, they march back there as Championship runners up with the highest season’s points tally in their history. Roberto Di Matteo’s side go into the season’s finale unbeaten in their last 11 matches- eight of them wins, and they are unbeaten at the Hawthorns in the league since third placed Nottingham Forest won 3-1 there at the start of January. It is not their home form though that makes them stand out from the rest. Albion have lost the least amount of games away from home in the Championship having been defeated just three times-  one of them a 3-1 defeat at Oakwell in September with the others coming at Bristol City in February and QPR in March and have hit 41 goals on their travels, comfortably the best in the league.

Barnsley are looking to end their season on a high after suffering an alarming dip as 2009-2010 has entered the final straight. The Reds were 11th at the end of February after a 1-0 win over Blackpool, but have won just one of the 12 matches since, and none of the last nine. If they make it 10 without victory on Sunday it will be their longest winless run since an 11 game stretch in 2003-2004. A win though at the Hawthorns this weekend will mean they finish the season on 56 points- their best total at this level since 1998-1999 when they finished on 58. A draw would mean they equal their total of 54 from the 2000-2001 season- the year before relegation. Anything less than three points though will mean they will fail to match or beat the 55 they gained in 2007-2008. Also if they win, they will be the only side to do the double over the Baggies this season.

Overall playing record for 2nd May:

Barnsley:

Barnsley have a dreadful record on the 2nd May having won just four of their 14 matches on this date, and none of the last four. They have lost the last two – 1-0 at home to Bristol City in 2004 and 1-0 at Leicester in 1998- the game that confirmed relegation from the Premier League and their last victory on this date was a 1-0 success at Middlesbrough in 1990.

Barnsley: Played 14, Won 4, Drawn 3, Lost 7, Scored 13, Conceded 16

West Brom’s record is not much better having won five of the 13 2nd May fixtures they have had, and they have also lost the last two- 1-0 at Tottenham last year and 2-0 at home to Arsenal in 2005. Their last victory on this date was 3-1 at Shrewsbury in 1992.

West Brom: Played 13, Won 5, Drawn 2, Lost 6, Scored 19, Conceded 19

Record on the final day: (1999-2009)

Barnsley have just about won more than they have lost on the final day of the season in the last 10 years- six to five, and have won four of the last six. The most notable successes came last season when a 2-1 win at Plymouth ensured Championship survival and a 2-1 at Walsall in 2006 earned a League One Play-Off place on their way to promotion. They have though suffered defeat on the final day in two of the three Championship years, 3-0 at Cardiff in 2008 and of course 7-0 at West Brom in 2007.

Barnsley: Won: 6 Drawn: 0 Lost: 5 Scored: 13 Conceded: 21.

West Brom have been pretty successful on the final day in the last 10 years, winning five and losing three. They are unbeaten on the final day since a 2-0 defeat at home to Nottingham Forest in 2004, and they secured the Championship title by winning 2-0 at QPR in 2008.

West Brom: Won: 5 Drawn: 3 Lost: 3 Scored: 21 Conceded: 11

West Brom lie in 2nd place in the Coca-Cola Championship with 90 points from 45 games.

Barnsley lie in 18th place in the Coca-Cola Championship with 53 points from 45games.

West Brom will remain 2nd regardless of the result whilst Barnsley could go as high as 15th with victory.
