Davey Hints At January Signing

Reds boss Simon Davey has hinted he may strengthen his threadbare squad in the January transfer window.

Davey has seen Martin Devaney, Dennis Souza and Iain Hume ruled out for lengthy periods and was forced to put youngster Jacob Butterfield on the bench for the 2-2 draw at Swansea.

With The Reds also short on goals Davey has hinted he could spend when the window opens in two weeks but only if the right person comes along.

He told www.barnsleyfc.co.uk:

"We are looking to strengthen and looking for the next Dennis Souza or Heinz Muller. We will look everywhere, see what our requirements are in January and look to pull someone out again. We know what we want and where we have to strengthen. It is fine to say that there is money available to spend but what if the players we want aren't?

"When you look at the top strikers in this division they will be with Wolves, Reading and Birmingham and they will not want to come to Barnsley Football Club. When you look at the league below and the likes of Fryatt, Mackail-Smith and Lambert then you will be fighting with everybody for their signatures"

There had been rumours doing the rounds that compensation had been agreed with Sheffield United over the incident which left Hume with a fractured skull and that Barnsley were set to bid £2.5m for Hume's replacement at Leicester- Matt Fryatt who has hit 22 goals in 26 appearances for the Foxes already this season including two hat-tricks in his last three games to help them to the top of League One.

This claims have yet to be confirmed.
