Barnsley have today confirmed their sixth permanent summer signing, snapping up free agent John Cofie on a one-year deal with the option of a second.

The Ghanian born 20-year-old was released by English champions Manchester United this summer after failing to appear for the first team after signing from Burnley at the age of 14.

He spent time on loan in League One last season with Notts County and the Reds' South Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United. He also had a loan spell with Belgian side Royal Antwerp in 2012.

Reds boss David Flitcroft told BBC Radio Sheffield of his new signing:

"He's a signing with immense talent and potential,"

"He lost his way a little bit and we've been able to pick him up. I'm excited to be working with him.

"We've got to work with him and show him his objectives for the team. We'll look to develop him as a central striker."

Cofie joins Dale Jennings, Chris O'Grady, Wade Joyce, Christian Dibble and Lewin Nyatanga as the new arrivals so far this pre-season.
