Mitch Ward is to undergo an ankle operation and has been ruled out until after Christmas.
The 31-year-old, who had been suffering from a hamstring injury, returned to the treatment room after developing an ankle problem last week.
This will be a major blow to Tykes caretaker-manager Glyn Hodges as Ward has been one of his more consistent midfielders.
