John Dennis today announced his decision to retire. Changes to be club's ownership and boardroom will probably be annouced in the Press conference at Oakwell on Monday.

Despite, his popularity being at its lowest ebb in the past year or so, John Dennis has worked hard for Barnsley FC over the years culminating in our promotion to the Premiership in 1997.

This should not be forgotten and though he made some grave and costly mistakes in the last few years, he should still be thanked by Tykes fans for the good times when we see him at Oakwell next season.

On the Official site, Peter Doyle said: "I would like to place on record my most sincere thanks to Mr John Dennis for the service he has given to this Football Club. I would like to thank not only John but also his late father, who saved this Club on more than one occasion.

"People only have to look around this stadium to know what John Dennis has done for Barnsley. Oakwell will stand for all time as a testament to John, his late father and his family’s devotion to Barnsley FC.

"I am privileged to be able to say I knew both of them and I for one will always be grateful for what the Dennis family created.

"John can hold his head up high and I do not know anyone who has given me so much support in all I have ever done. There have been times during the last seven months where it would have been easy for me to give up without the total support of Mr Dennis.

"Once again on behalf of the true supporters of Barnsley Football Club I would like to wish Mr Dennis all the best. Please don’t be a stranger – I’ll make sure you are not.

"I reluctantly accept Mr Dennis’ request to retire".
