Lack of firepower a worry as Reds need shootout to see off Scunthorpe.

Last updated : 07 August 2013 By Rob Miles (BarnsleyBoy)

This tie was the only one of the 31 First Round ties tonight to be goal-less after 90 minutes and it was the third successive home League Cup tie against lower league opposition that Barnsley had failed to score against (Morecambe 0-2 2011, Rochdale 0-1 2010.)

Barnsley have now won their last six penalty shootouts stretching back to 1993. Their victims are- Scunthorpe 2013, Blackpool 2006, Swansea 2006, Preston 2005, Notts County 2003, Leicester 1993). The last side to defeat Barnsley in a shootout was Grimsby in 1992.

There were 18 penalties taken in total, nine scored and nine missed.

Tonight’s attendance of 5,238 was The Reds highest League Cup home attendance since the Third Round victory over Burnley in 2009.

Barnsley have now failed to score in either of their first two matches of the season. They failed to score in any of their first three in 2011-2012.
