Ridsdale still want to buy Barnsley

Peter Ridsdale is still interested in buying the Reds despite Peter Doyle's decision to sell the Reds to an Icelandic led consortium.

The former Leeds United chairman made a formal offer to buy the Reds on Thursday morning, but this was rejected by Doyle.

However, the Icelandic deal still has to be approved by the Football League and Ridsdale told Radio Sheffield he had not given up hope of taking over at Oakwell.

"As far as I am concerned I am as keen as I have ever been to to get into Barnsley Football Club and inject the funds and create the excitement the fans deserve," Ridsdale said.

"If that opportunity is still available, then I am still here.

"We had done six weeks of work with due diligence - we had agreement with the Football League, the PFA and that suggests everything was in place.

"After the conversations I have had with the football authorities, I would think it is impossible for a deal [with Doyle and the Icelandic consortium] to be completed by Monday."

Whoever takes over will need to make some fairly quick decisions regarding the management and playing side of the club.

Glyn Hodges faces an uncertain future with Gudjon Thordarsson supposedly taking charge as manager with Ronnie Glavin as his assistant.

Meanwhile last season's leading scorers Mike Sheron and Bruce Dyer have already left and the Reds only experienced goalkeeper Matt Ghent is set to join Macclesfield on Monday.
